NEW Exploring Art Class for January 2015!

Exploring Art –
Basic Concepts and Skills
*PART – 1

Ages 9 years to adult (or with instructor approval)
8 WEEKLY meetings Starting January 13th, 2015
Tuesdays
TWO CLASS TIMES AVAILABLE:
10:00-11:00 OR 4:00-5:00
At Pine Grove Baptist Church

This beginning course is perfect for young artists and/or those who have not had art instruction before.  We will take an “exploration” approach to basic skills and concepts such as line, shape, and composition with a variety of materials (including wire sculpture).  The focus of this class is on strengthening and working from observation skills rather than “how to draw” things.  We will further our study of line and shape through discussions and activities based on the Abstract art of Wassily Kandinsky and Joan Miro’

*Part – 2 will be offered for another 8 weeks starting March 24.  You do not have to have had Part – 1 to enroll in Part – 2 (but it is helpful).  Enrollment will be opened up to Part 1 students first, and any open spots after that can then be filled by incoming students.

Class Size Limit: 10 (5 student minimum)
If there is a waiting list, I will consider offering a 2nd class on Tuesday mornings 10-11

Class Fee (includes all supplies)
Early Bird Deal if paid by January 2 = $60.00 per first student, $40.00 per additional sibling
After Jan. 2nd = $75.00 per first student, $55.00 per additional sibling

8 -Week Session  Begins September 5th - Last Class October 24th

This fun beginners class will take students on a journey through the standard genres of portrait, landscape, and still life while introducing foundational skills. Our first stop will be in abstraction where we will begin playing with the basic elements of line and shape. And, each stop along the way will gradually lead to increased control of these essentials, ending in more realistic depictions of simple imagery. Students will observe the work of selected artists and will explore materials such as pencil, ink, watercolor, collage, and pastel. Class Size Limit: 10

For EARLY BIRD RATES, register by August 30th
$50 per 1st student (supplies included) and $40 per additional sibling (immediate family/same class)

8-week Session  Begins September 10th - Last Class on October 29th

Ages 10 years and older
(or 9 year olds who show a self-driven interest and with instructor permission)

*Best for those newer to drawing OR with little
previous art instruction - you can be a beginner AT ANY AGE,
so you're never "too old" for this class*

This class is for both the artistic and artistically-challenged. Students will explore the “ABC’s” of drawing with line and shape, basic concepts of composition, the simple impact of line variation, the usefulness of negative space, tricks to building simple and complex imagery, and more. Although we will complete one or two “finished” works, please note that the goal of this class is not to generate a stack of frame-able art pieces. Instead, students will create a skills sketchbook, recording their discoveries throughout the session. At this point, more emphasis is placed on understanding the processes and concepts than achieving a perfect result.
Class Size Limit 10

For EARLY BIRD RATES, register by August 30th

and $40 per additional sibling (immediate family/same class)

The First Round of Art Classes Comes to a Close...

Today was the conclusion of my first round of art classes for kids offered through the Horizons Extension Program at Pine Grove Baptist Church.  I began by offering two classes to homeschoolers - Skill Builders Basic Drawing for ages 9+ and Skill Builders Jr. for ages 5-10.

My Jr. Skill Builders
My Jr.'s rode on the "Art Express," exploring different types of artwork from abstract to realistic and discussed the work of key artists.  Along the way, we studied the portrait, landscape, still life, and multi-media collage, and we worked in a variety of media including pencil, ink, oil pastel, watercolor, and torn paper.

The big kids created a reference sketchbook of important basic concepts and skills in drawing.  Topics covered included basic lines and shapes, composition, sketching, contour and cross-contour, proportion, and positive and negative space.  Again, we discussed a variety of famous work by artists throughout the centuries.  The goal was to learn about and practice various skills - NOT to end up with a stack of frame-worthy art pieces.  However, I think there were definitely some pieces created by each of the students that have earned that honor.
